This morning, just before 11:00 AM, some Salem Fiber customers may have experienced slowdowns when trying to access Google services (like Gmail, YouTube, Google Drive, etc.).
The issue was not a complete internet outage, and services like Cloudflare, Facebook, and most other websites remained unaffected. The slowdown was due to a routing issue with one of our upstream internet providers, Cogent, which was impacting traffic going westbound, including connections to Google.
As soon as we detected the issue, our team, working closely with SFCN (our upstream network partner), quickly rerouted traffic through an alternate provider, Zayo. This switch resolved the problem almost immediately, and things returned to normal by 11:13 AM.
We're continuing to monitor the situation, and SFCN is working with Cogent to determine why this issue keeps happening.
We appreciate your patience and understanding and as always, thank you for being part of Salem Fiber!

My test equipment didn’t detect any outages or slowdowns last night, though I’ll admit it doesn’t test every possible path. If there was an issue, it would have likely been upstream with the provider or a particular service, as everything on my end appeared normal. We’re still routing through the Zayo connection due to the earlier Cogent issue, and all my recent testing has shown solid, stable performance.
Seems there was another disruption last night. Internet was down completely for maybe 60 seconds and then some services came up and then several minutes later everything came online. I'm confident it was an issue with the provider to Salem Fiber as a friend in SF had the same issue. After years of almost zero outages, it seems the issues, albeit brief ones, are occurring more and more frequently and all coming from Salem's service provider. I still think Salem Fiber is the best in town when it comes to cost and reliability...just commenting with how spoiled we were for the last few years.
My mistake! Must've been something odd on my end then.

Thank you for the update. We noticed that things weren’t working very well during that time. Hopefully we can get it permanently resolved.
